Would you like to know what is required in order to become a LEGO Designer?

You do not have to wait more, we will give you some tips.
Note: These tips do not guarantee you will get a job working at LEGO, they are only meant to serve as a guide.

TIP #1

In order to become a LEGO Designer, the first thing you need to do is to play a lot, yes, you read that right, play a lot, with LEGO, let your creativity flow, find many different ways to build what is on your mind, a bird, a plane, a house, a beach, a car, whatever it may be, then find ways to enhance it, learn about building techniques, you can do a search in google for "advanced lego building techniques".

One of the things that is also recommended is to restrict yourself a bit, e.g.: use only classic bricks, this limits the types of bricks you can use and at the same time forces you to be more creative on how you use the pieces in order to overcome the limitations.

TIP #2

Study a lot: learn about LEGO, watch youtube videos, especially how to videos, learn about LEGO company history, read a lot of books of many different areas: Psychology, Human Development, Product/Toy/Industrial Design, Marketing, Sales, Engineering, Math, Physics, Architecture.

Learning a lot about many different areas expands your understanding of the world and how things on it work, psychology and human development allows you to understand how kids learn and play, and how cognitive and motor skills evolve overtime, product/toy design will help you understand how to create products people actually need or want, math and physics will allow you to learn things such as how gravity, and energy work, which is really useful when creating simple machines or products that rely on movement, architecture allows you to learn how real world buildings are created and about the many different styles there are.

TIP #3

Use digital designer tools such as Bricklink Studio. Using digital building software allows you to easily and quickly design new models and drive test many building techniques, it also allows you to find pieces you did not even know exist. Using digital designer tools also keeps your costs free since you do not have to buy pieces. Bricklink Studio also allows you to import pieces from official LEGO products, so it gives you the opportunity of reusing unique pieces that may have only existed in specific official sets.

TIP #4

Learn to draw, at least sketching. With LEGO, it is important you are able to communicate your ideas, one of the recommendations to do that is through sketching, which allows others to understand better the idea you have on your mind.

TIP #5

Create, create a lot of models of your own and submit then to LEGO Ideas website. LEGO ideas is designed as a tool in which users can submit their models designs and have a chance of having LEGO produce it as an official LEGO set, however, even if your set is not produced, the fact of having your models submitted in the site gives you more exposure, allows for more people to see your work, which in turn can become an opportunity to land a job.

TIP #6

Share, share your models. Share your creations in social media profiles, Facebook groups for lego fans and creators. Having as many persons as possible knowing about your talent also increases your exposure.
